Color Me House Review

I am a big proponent of encouraging children to be creative and explore their imagination. Isn't this what being a kid is all about? I love when I find children's products that promote creativity, which is why I am really excited about introducing you guys to a wonderful company called: Color Me House.
The Color Me House line features a house and a rocket made of recyclable, eco-friendly 2ply cardboard and they are made right here in the US. I had the opportunity to try these out and they are awesome! Below, you can see pictures of the playhouse. My plan was to let Lucas paint it, but it's been raining a lot here in HOTlanta and I wasn't about to let a toddler loose in the house with paint. So, Mike and I painted the house to look like a barn and it looks really cool! I also have to say that we had a blast doing it! We think we may even add a little white picket fence around it made of painted yard stakes. I already had ideas for a little girl playhouse. You could take some small boxes and make flower boxes and attach to the windows. Then, fill them with some cute silk flowers. You could add little curtains...oh the possibilities are endless! So adorable! I'm going to wait for a nice day and then let Lucas paint the Rocket. When I do, I will blog about it and show you guys video of the little guy having fun painting!
There are so many things that I love about these forts/playhouses. First, they are totally blank so that your little one can turn it into the fort of his or her dreams. The house could be a barn, a fire station, a castle, a pet shop, a beauty shop...there are limitless possibilities! Or, can't you just see your aspiring astronauts planning their trip to the moon? Your child can use paint, crayons, stickers, wallpaper and much more to decorate or design their fort. The forts can safely be used by small children as well. There are no staples, sharp corners, or anything that can hurt a child. Also great is that these forts can be easily stored! They fold flat, which is great for anyone that lives in an apartment or honestly most of us mom's whose homes are overrun with toys! They are really durable so don't think that because they are made of cardboard they are not going to last. Your little one will get a lot of enjoyment from it. And, finally, best of all, they are SO AFFORDABLE! The Color Me House is $39.95 and the Color Me Rocket is $49.95. You can't beat that for a product that will bring your child so much enjoyment and encourage them to "think outside the box". From now to the end of the year, April is offering Jolly Mom readers FREE SHIPPING by using the code SHIP5675. Below, you can see more pictures of the rocket and house from April's website.
Meet April McCray:
Tell us a little bit about yourself and how Color Me House was started.
I am a mother of three children ages 12,11 and 3 and happily married for 14 years. I have always loved arts and crafts with my kids and watching them be creative is one of the greatest experiences of being a mother. Yes I am one of those that cries every year that I opened my children's school made Christmas gifts as they stared at me in anticipation as I unwrapped their gift - so proud they were, so proud was I. We began making forts for our first born when he was two. My husband had the best childhood stories of making forts out of cardboard boxes and would tell them to us. When child number three came along and the forts began so did my husbands stories once again. This time my creativity got the best of me and Color Me House and Color Me Rocket were born. My kids love them, and now I think they are actually staring proudly at us.
How do you balance motherhood with being a business owner?
Balancing motherhood with a business is a challenge many of us face. To me its more about balancing life. I make a lot of adjustments to my schedule so that I don't miss time with my family. My favorite time is dinner, this is one moment out of every day that I do not sacrifice. Dinner is our family's time to be together at one table, side by side, no phones, no computers, no TV, no interruptions. We talk, ask each other about our day and what the best thing that happened to us today was. I am thankful for this time every day.

I love the house:) I know my daughter would want it to be a princess castle!
December 19, 2008 8:09 AM
These look awesome! We have a second baby arriving in January so the timing would perfect to have a "new" toy arrive for make believe play while baby # 2 is sleeping! I think both are great. My husband would have more fun with the rocket, but being a girl myself I could imagine more make-believe scenarios in the house! Thanks for coordinating the giveaway.

I would love the house for my kids to play in. They would pretend to be the parents or act like cats like they sometimes do. They would color the house with very bright colors and maybe add glitter to it.

This is so fabulous. My daughter and I have transformed many a cardboard box into homes, kitchens and the like.
My daughter was thrilled when I showed her this. She said she would make this into a reading corner in her room. She would love to have the house.
She wants to decorate it like a pretty doll house. Like a collage, with pictures, pom poms, feathers etc. (In her words)

I LOVE these! When I was young, my parents didn't have much extra money, but one year for Christmas, they gave a cardboard rocket ship to my brothers and sisters and I. It was incredible, and I have the best memories of it!
Of course, I'd choose the rocket, and my children agree. :)

December 19, 2008 12:41 PM
Oops. I forgot to add the second answer you asked for...my girls would turn the rocket ship into just about anything. They currently color on simple grocery store boxes and turn them into all manner of splendor, and I'm sure they'd do the same with the rocket!

My favorite is the house...or is it the rocket? Oh my I can't decide. I will stick with my first instinct and say the house and I really don't have any idea what our child/children will make it into because we actually just became foster parents and have been providing intermittent temporary care for several different children so the possibilities are limitless.

I would choose the house because it can become so many different things with my grandchildren. One granddaughter may want it to be her "castle"; a grandson may want to turn it into his "shop" or business where he "goes to work". The ideas are endless.

I think my son would love either one, but the rocket might be his fav...maybe. :) And if Daddy has his way, he'd decorate it like something from Star Trek! haha
December 20, 2008 11:36 PM
I would get the house. My daughter is still a little young to paint it, so I would have to decide whether to paint it now or wait until she is older so she can decide how to decorate it, thanks!

These are really great. Thanks for showcasing them. I think my girls would go for the house and turn it into a fairy hideaway.
December 21, 2008 5:39 AM
I'm sure my toddler son would love both, but the rocket is definitely unique. He's been talking about wanting to be a pilot lately, so we would probably decorate it with scribbles of many colors and take it on many a pretend trip around the world.
December 21, 2008 10:52 AM
This is definitely on the list of things we need. For now we're counting down the days (96 to go) until Bells' arrival.
December 21, 2008 11:46 AM
I love the Color ME House, I like how the little ones can color and draw and decorate it

Very Cute idea, my duaghter would like the house. She would love to play and decorate it.
thanks for another wonderful contest.
December 21, 2008 5:32 PM
How cool are these? I love them! We would pick the Rocket. All four of the kids would love it and it would be so cool to watch them use their imaginations to go to the moon or other planets. They would want to put some of their glow in the dark stickers inside the rocket to make it seem like they really are in outer space. It would probably be painted along the lines of the space shuttle.
Thanks so much!
December 21, 2008 5:34 PM
I subscribed to both!
Thanks again!
December 21, 2008 5:40 PM
Both of my kids would love the Color Me Rocket! I imagine my daughter would paint it pink (yes, she's a bit girly) but my son would ever so sweetly come along behind her with his two year old scribbles.. either way, it'd be their creation and they'd have a blast playing in their rocket.
December 21, 2008 5:58 PM
My son would love the rocket and decorate it with markers, paint and stickers I am sure@! thanks, justicecw@hotmail.com

We'd definitely take the rocket for our son -- he loves this sort of thing -- and I am convinced he'd paint it completely blue all over -- his favorite color of them all!
Thanks!

That is the cutest rocket for the female astronauts in this house! I can just see them eating their space meals and drinking Tang inside their ship.

My niece would love to have this so she could pretend she had a nursery for her baby dolls.
December 22, 2008 8:26 AM
I would love a rocket for my grandson.
December 22, 2008 8:49 AM
My kids would love the rocket, and they would each have to color a side themselves. It might not be beautiful to our eyes, but they would have a "blast" doing it!

I would like to win the rocket for my grandson. He will be two next month. I have never met him so I am not sure what he would do with it but I send him gifts at Christmas and birthdays anyway. I am sure he would have a blast with it!

My kids would love the rocket! We had a huge box from moving that my kids colored and we cut hole in for them! It was pretty much just scribbles but it was adorable! We finally had to let it go after being in the living room all summer! They love a "real" one like this!

my grandson would love the house, or the rocket!
December 22, 2008 2:43 PM
Love it! I think they're both great and would be happy to win either one, but my top pick would be the house. My daughter would probably ask me to help her paint the Bear in the Big Blue House characters on it. :)
December 22, 2008 3:21 PM
A house that my two princesses could turn into a castle....
December 22, 2008 3:22 PM
My son would definitely want the rocket! He's obsessed with all things outer space and alien so he would want it to be a spaceship to go in his bedroom aka "Outer Space!"

I like the rocket, but I think that Emma would prefer the house. I'd let her just go crazy with it and color it however she likes. Since she is just barely 3, her coloring is still mostly scribbles.
December 22, 2008 4:23 PM
My daughter would love the house but my son would love the rocket and because he is older than she is I'd choose the rocket for him.
I think my son would either decorate it as the curious george episode or the word world episode.
December 22, 2008 5:12 PM
I love this playhose idea!
So cute was the one Painted like a Barn!
December 22, 2008 6:12 PM
the house is beautiful
December 22, 2008 7:05 PM
Definitely the rocket. My son would want it to be orange and he would probably wrap himself in foil to visit the "aliens."
thanks

Thanks.

My nephews would love the rocket! They would probably make it into a "construction sight" rocket lol.

The rocket is fabulous! My kids would work on it together so it would be quite unique. My daughter would draw serious pictures on it, some animals, some sponsor signage, and my son would be putting stripes & polka dots & every sticker he could find onto it. It would be very bright with every type of design there could be room for!
December 22, 2008 10:19 PM
I follow your blog. I love the house, and I know my Grandkids would love to have the house. I have told them stories of how I would make my own forts or houses when I was a child. I would hang quilts over a card table to make a house to play in. Or, I would make tents on the clothesline using quilts and blankets. I can remember getting a huge cardboard house when I was a child. I thought it was the best thing ever to play with. I know my Grandkids would love this.
December 22, 2008 10:27 PM
I would love to have the rocket!!
I have a new grandson that will be the perfect age this summer !
