Babywearing at its Finest! ERGO Baby Carrier Review and GIVEAWAY!

Wednesday, January 14, 2009 Posted by Jolly Mom

If you’re a mom, you’ve undoubtedly heard of the ERGO Baby Carrier. It’s touted by many as the Cadillac of all baby carriers and moms-in-the-know swear by it. Unfortunately for me, two years ago when I was in the market for a baby carrier, I had never heard of the ERGO. I made the mistake of buying another very well-known carrier sold in major stores. We paid $120 for the top of the line model that promised not to strain your back. I wore it two times for a total of 20 minutes. My back hurt really badly and the carrier was bulky and uncomfortable. Instead, I used my sling, which was great for quick trips or anytime that I didn't need both of my hands. However, I was never completely hands-free so certain activities like cleaning the house, long walks, or shopping were out of the question with a sling.

About a year later, I started hearing about the ERGO and I was intrigued with all of its features. For instance, The ERGO Baby Carrier can be worn on the front, back or hip position. It's also ergonomically designed in a way that supports the correct sitting position for your baby's hip, pelvis, and spine growth. It also alleviates the physical strain for the parent by dispersing most of the baby's weight between the hips and thighs. One of the coolest features of the ERGO is that it can be used from newborn (with additional infant insert sold separately) up to 40 pounds! This means you only need to buy ONE carrier ever! The carrier I purchased could only carry him to 26 pounds. The ERGO also has a sleeping hood that supports a sleeping baby’s head and a pocket on the back of the carrier that is easily accessible with a side zipper.

ERGO recently gave me the opportunity to try a baby carrier out for myself. They very generously sent me a carrier, a backpack, and a front pouch. I have to admit that as soon as I got the package, my husband and I had to try it out immediately! I now know why ERGO has such a loyal following of moms and dads who swear by their carriers. You can strap on a 30 pound 18 month old toddler to your body and not feel any pain! That same day, Mike helped me clean the entire house with Lucas strapped onto his back. And, I cooked dinner with Lucas in the hip carry position. It is seriously amazing to wear your child and be totally hands-free. You should have seen Lucas-he was so excited to be a part of everything and from a totally different view point. He LOVES being carried on our backs!

I was also so impressed with the quality of the fabric and padding. The fabric is really soft and the carrier has thick padding in all the right places. All of these features contribute to how comfortable the ERGO is. You know, one of the reasons I like slings is that they almost feel like clothing when you put them on. That is exactly the feeling I get when I put the ERGO on. It just feels natural and I can move freely.

The accessories ERGO sent are extremely convenient and provide you with a total hands-free experience while out. The front pouch can be attached to the waist belt of the ERGO in any of the carrying positions. It also has a shoulder strap so that you can use it even when you’re not using the carrier.

The backpack is my favorite accessory. It easily and quickly snaps around the straps of the carrier giving you an all-in-one carrier and backpack. It has exterior pockets for water bottles or baby bottles and it’s really roomy inside. When you use the backpack, you can leave your diaper bag at home! It’s perfect for a long outings, a day at the park, hiking, shopping, and so much more.

Want it: ERGO Baby Carrier's are available in a variety of colors and retail for $105. Accessories sold separately. Please visit the ERGO website to purchase.

Well let's see I learned that the company is a family owned company with it's base in Maui, Hawaii. I also found out that this was born out of necessity (aren't most great inventions)...I so need one of these, my daughter is literally glued to me 24/7!

Oh this is a dream for me. I carry both my boys since neither are walkers yet. I have a pouch sling but have always wanted to try an Ergo. I love that they are working with a pediatrician and you can ask her questions on the site. I also love that are parent resources on the site.

wow, first entry! With twins it's always nice to have my hands free, although it rarely happens. Ergo baby has been chosen as one of the top 20 baby items for 20 years and rightfully so. I like that they auction off slightly used carriers so nothing goes to waste and their mission to support babywearing and attached parenting.

I wasn't sure how and for how long the infant insert was needed, but here's what the website said: "It supports your baby’s head and neck, as well as spine and hips during those first crucial months of development. Once your baby can hold her/his head up for long periods of time and is comfortable with her/his hips in a splayed position the use of the infant insert is no longer necessary". Its awesome that it can be used from newborn through 2+ (we have friends who carry their 2 year old in it!!). Thanks for a great giveaway! laurachilton {at} hotmail.com

I learned they carry a organic line. I always admire these carriers when I see them. I really want something that will allow me to front carry as well as back carry my son.
    Thanks for the entry

I learned that the chest straps won't need readjusting each time the carrier is taken on and off, which is great, because it would be faster to put on.

I was impressed that they had auctions of their carriers, also parenting advice and a column ask the dr.

WOW this is an amazing carrier! I am so impressed that the sling can hold up to 40 pounds! I have never heard of ERGO before today but now that I have, I definitely know I need one of these!

What I learned about the company ERGO is that the carrier was developed out of the owner/designers (Karen Frost) need for her son in 2001. She is now focusing in Research and Development to extend the product line.

Karin sewed the first 50 baby carriers on her own machine until the demand motivated having it manufactured and sold on her website.

What a great looking carrier that looks easy on and off for me and my granddaughters.

They've been marketing carriers since 2003. I love the ergo and would love to have the accessories.

ERGObaby recommends a weight limit of 40 pounds for its carrier; however, the carrier has been tested up to 90 pounds. And I saw a picture of a lady with her 4 year old on her back while mowing the lawn. WOW! Thanks for such a great giveaway from a family-owned business.
