The Perfect Sippy Cup: The Safe Sippy Review and Giveaway
By now, we are all aware of the dangers of BPA and other toxins on the health of our children. Since leaching usually occurs when the item is heated, we need to be very cautious with items that go in the dishwasher or come in contact with hot liquids or foods. A biggie is of course, the sippy cup. I recently had the opportunity to test The Safe Sippy and it is the best sippy cup my son has ever had. Honestly, they should call it The Perfect Sippy!
The Safe Sippy is made by Kid Basix and this is a company that thinks of every thing. Every detail of this cup is well thought out. First and foremost, The Safe Sippy is made from non-leaching medical-grade stainless steel, which does not interact with foods or liquids. As Kid Basix says, "what you put in is what you get out." It has a colorful rubber sleeve, which serves a few purposes. One, it looks cool! It definitely makes the cup appealing to children (and me) with the bright colors and sleek design. It also protects the cup from being damaged when your toddler inevitably slings it across the room. Also, it helps insulate cold drinks and protects little hands from getting cold. It comes with removable handles so that when your child outgrows them; you can just take them off. The spout is actually shaped like a straw because research has shown that the traditional, wide spout can cause speech problems. The little plastic this cup actually has is all certified free of Bisphenol A, phthalates and DEHA.After having Lucas use this sippy cup for almost two weeks, here's what I can tell you:
- It's dishwasher safe and this makes me very happy.
- Unlike other stainless steel sippy cups, this one is very light and Lucas can pick it up without any problems.
- The rubber sleeve is also removable, which means you can clean under it if you want.
- This cup is totally leak proof. Truly, I haven't seen it leak once yet.
- I love that it doesn't have a lid or top. I bought a very highly acclaimed stainless steel sippy that has a hinged lid and it broke within a week after Lucas threw it across the room. The entire cup is useless now and it was not cheap. The Safe Sippy doesn't have a top or cap because it doesn't need it since it does not leak.
- The rubber sleeve is not only great to look at, but it definitely prevents the cup from being damaged. Lucas has thrown this cup around a couple of times and it's still intact.
- Did I mention that it doesn't leak?

The Safe Sippy comes in three bright, modern colors and can be purchased at various online retailers or in a store near you.
This giveaway has ended. Congratulations to the winner, Deidra. Winner has been emailed and has 48 hours to contact me.

i want these!!!!!! the narrow spout is supposed to decrease the chance of speech delay. a total plus to me.
February 27, 2009 12:54 AM
Ooo! Nice :) Besides the 99% of the awesome features you already featured I have to say that adding a tapered waist is a great idea for switching back and forth between the handles. Plus, with the tapered waist it makes attaching a leash to it a lot easier.
Thanks for a fun giveaway!

The contact between water and plastic is kept to a minimum in their design (but some plastic was used because no one wants to sip on a stainless steel straw).

Something about the company: they have a sense of humour. This is my favourite part:
“How come the cap is plastic?” The answer is simple: No child (or adult, for that matter) wants to suck on a stainless steel straw. It hurts our teeth just thinking about it.

February 27, 2009 11:26 AM
All plastic parts (cap and handles) are made from #5 plastic or polypropylene that is the safest and most stable of all plastics. All plastic used is tested and/or certified free of BPA and phthalates. Only when a child is actually drinking from the cup does the fluid inside come into contact with the plastic, so what you put in is what you get out.

Even though the cup is manufactured in China the company has done everything to ensure the factory, worker conditions and product is up to standards. They visit the factory frequently to make sure it's very clean, orderly and humane. They even employ handicapped workers. It also fits the (International Standards of Operation). This information is important to me because oversea production standards and treatment of workers is a cause that I have been involved in.

The design is pretty amazing really. The lid is bigger than the cup to prevent denting. You mentioned in your review that the wide mouths of other sippy cups have been found to cause speech problems, but they also talk about how the straw-shape is better. Frankly, it makes it easier to get your child something to drink in a restaurant if they already know how to use a straw, too!

I found that the cup is put out by an American company, but manufacted in China (near Shanghai).

You can buy Valve and Gasket replacement packs! I hate the sippy cups that make it hard to get replacement parts!

the handles are removable :D My daughter never liked handles and some sippies they are are attached permanently which makes them less useful!

If you handwash the cup use mild dish soap or a mixture of vinegar and baking soda.

I was interested to know how long these cups hold up. The site mentioned how the stainless steel may develop small rust spots over time, but it sounds like it would still be perfectly safe to keep using! Good to know! I really like these things!

You can use mild dish soap or vinegar and baking soda mixture to clean the cup. Do not use adbrasive cleaners or bleach on the cup!

I love that they have a tapered waist. I just think it looks cute! :) I also love the fact that they considered using a stainless spout, but, who wants to drink from a stainless spout in their mouths. So, they made it as safe as possible with BPA free plastics.

You aren't supposed to use the sippy w/ hot liquids due to the thinner stainless steel.
Thanks!

I love the colors! And when you say dishwasher safe, do you mean it's not going to get warped in any way causing the lid to eventually not screw on properly? Cuz that's what always happens to our sippy cups unless we hand wash them (and I hate handwashing anything).
