Get Rid of Washing Machine Odor: Smelly Washer Review, Giveaway, & Coupon Code (3 winners)
Before we purchased our new washing machine about two years ago, we had a big problem with our washing machine getting a bad mildew odor. I know...gross. It happens though and when it does; it is really difficult to get the smell out of you washing machine and even worse-your clothes. The odor is actually caused by a fungus that grows from using too much detergent and fabric softener. The fungus will grow in your washing machine and will stay there until you get rid of it. This is more than just an odor problem; it is a health concern and can definitely cause health problems. I recently found out about a really useful product called Smelly Washer that promises to eliminate washing machine odor and gets rid of the mold and mildew.About Smelly Washer (from the website):
Smelly Washer will make your stinky washing machine smell fresh again! Smelly Washer eliminates the embarrassment of moldy smelling clothes, towels, and linens - all while eliminating dangerous molds and allergens that are secretly breeding in your fabrics. Smelly Washer Cleaner is guaranteed to eliminate washing machine odor, fungus, and mildew from any top load or front load washing machine by simply adding 1 level cap (1 tbsp.) to the detergent dispenser or directly into the tub. Agitate in a hot setting and your washer will CLEAN ITSELF!
To properly test Smelly Washer out, I had to take it to my moms house. Her front loading washing machine has started to get a bad odor so we tried it out there. She is known to put TWO capfuls of fabric softener in for every load! I've been telling her not to do that, but she will not listen-lol. Anyways, I am pretty sure that her washing machine has the bad smell because of that. To use Smelly Washer, all you do is put in a tablespoon where your detergent goes, turn your washing machine on the hottest water setting, let it agitate for a minute and then pause the machine. Then, you let it soak for at least two hours-longer is better. The instructions for Smelly Washer say that it may take several times before you get the smell out depending on how old your washing machine is and how bad the problem is. We had to let my moms washing machine soak over night two times, but it worked! Smelly Washer was able to completely remove the odor!Smelly Washer has received a lot of attention and praise because their product works! It may not be the most "exciting" product ever, but it gets rid of a problem that until now, I had no idea how to resolve. Smelly Washer will actually last one whole year AND it is all natural!
Want It: Smelly Washer can be purchased online for $16.99 plus shipping and handling. Smelly Washer is offering ALL Jolly Mom readers 10% OFF by entering jollymom in your order form!
This contest is closed. Congratulations to the winners, Erin, Leslie, and Blakesmom! Winners have been emailed and have 48 hours to contact me.

I learned that Fungus odor in clothes washers is caused by fungus that attaches to plastic and rubber parts in your washer. Clothes washers provide the perfect environment for fungus to grow because of the dark, wet conditions and because the detergent buildup is a food source. gross. amsbolda@hotmail.com

From the FAQ's: It's actually a good sign that it (your washing machine) smells worse! In more extreme cases as the outer layers of fungus get dissolved away the inner layers are exposed to air and may smell worse. Do another overnight soak. If your washer is several years old it may take several soaks to remove the build-up of detergent and fungus inside your washing machine.

I learned that, "Softener is dispensed in your washer by either gravity, centrifugal force or by suction created by flowing water and is simply too thick to be properly dispensed. Because softener is dispensed in the rinse cycle of a washing machine if builds up a residue on the inside of the outer tub. Odor-causing mold grows on this residue and is transferred to towels and clothing." I will not be using liquid fabric softener any longer.

Fascinating - I learned that rinse aid in the dishwasher is not necessarily the best idea because it changes the surface tension of the water - and is a chemical dispensed in the RINSE cycle, meaning it stays on there! (duh). Hey, that's just another thing I don't have to spend money on!!
