WordWorld: The Flying Ant DVD Review & Giveaway

Wednesday, June 03, 2009 Posted by Piera Jolly

I'm a strong believer in limiting TV time for children to mostly educational programs. Of course, it also has to be fun for kids or forget it-they will not give it the time of day! That's why I was so happy when I found out about the PBS KIDS series WordWorld! It is fun, engaging, and educational! WordWorld brings words to life through a patent-pending methodology that embeds words into the objects they represent, crystallizing the connection between letters, sounds and words. WordWorld, launching its second season, has set the standard for how best to use interactive media in early-literacy instruction. Just check out the the results from a U.S. Department of Education-funded study done on the show!

About the Study (from the press release):

A U.S. Department of Education-funded study found that WordWorld, an Emmy® winning PBS KIDS series, significantly strengthens early literacy skills in preschoolers, providing the building blocks essential for learning how to read. The study is part of the Ready To Learn Initiative that examines the effectiveness of various technologies being used to enhance the literacy skills of young children.

Overall gains from the study demonstrate that regardless of demographic, children developed important early literacy skills by watching WordWorld during the trial period. Key findings include:
  • Children doubled their oral vocabulary skills of words featured in WordWorld
  • Children tripled their ability to read specific words featured and built in WordWorld
  • Children in disadvantaged households where English is a second language showed gains in phonemic awareness, as well as oral vocabulary and reading words featured in WordWorld
We were sent a copy of WordWorld: The Flying Ant DVD and a couple of activity books for me to review and it is such an amazing program! It is so cool how EVERYTHING is made of the letters used to spell the item. For instance, the ANT is actually made from the letters A-N-T. This is such an innovative way to help children with word recognition. Lucas is young still at only 22 months, but I can already see this DVD helping him. He is able to recognize most letters so he enjoys pointing out the letters that make up the objects. This is one of his new favorite DVDs and I must say that it feels good knowing that he is watching something that is truly educational.

Here's a Peek at WordWorld!

Want It: Please visit PBSKids.org for information on show times in your area. Also, WordWorld is now available for download on iTunes! WordWorld products can be purchased at Target, Toys R Us, and Celebrate Express.

This contest is closed. Congratulations to the winner, Blakesmom! Winner has been emailed and has 48 hours to contact me.

Word World is a terrific show. Thank you for the chance to win.
