Back to School: Dorm Room Makeovers on a Budget

As you guys already know, Sears Holdings Corporation (SHC) flew several bloggers out to their headquarters in Chicago recently for their inaugural Home Design Summit. We had the awesome opportunity to preview their new Fall line of home furnishings, which included a very hip and modern line up of bedding, furniture, and decor for kids. Since it's almost back-to-school time, I thought it would be the opportune time to show you guys some of what I learned at the Home Design Summit.

The first thing that I learned is that you should not overpay for bedding! Seriously, Kmart and Sears have the most affordable bedding sets that I have seen to date. For example, this adorable Multi Stripe Reversible Microfiber Comforter Set (includes comforter and shams) retails for $24.99 at Kmart! Unbelievable.

Or, how about the Black/Pink Floral Microfiber Comforter Set which retails for $24.99 at Sears?!

I know what you're thinking. What about the quality? SHC has an unwavering quality control department--they care about what they sell and it shows. SHC actually sent me two bedding sets and sheets to try before the Home Design Summit and they are awesome! Not only are they excellent quality, but they are modern and versatile. Kids will love them!

Also, when looking for decor items--think outside of the box. Use items in a different way than they are meant to be used. For example, check out these pizza boxes hung on the wall, soda bottles displayed on a shelf, and cereal boxes on display. Affordable. Funky. Modern. Very Andy Warhol. Do the same when you buy storage pieces. Hang baskets or crates on the wall to hold towels, food, etc. Or use hanging clothes organizers to store snacks, supplies, and more. By the way, pretty much everything pictured {besides the pizza boxes and cinder blocks-lol} can be purchased at either Sears or Kmart!

Another cool thing that Kmart and Sears are doing to help parents and kids plan the perfect dorm room (you know the dorm room that is both cool AND affordable!) is by providing free downloadable checklists and other helpful tools on their website.

Those really are neat ideas (not sure about the pizza boxes, but the cereal boxes are cool, I actually have a box autographed by "Tony the Tiger"). As I mentioned in another post, I really have to get back to Sears and look around, we need to redo our bedroom (DESPERATLY) and it seems they have great products. Thanks for the review. :-)
