Tips on Decorating a Child's Room
One of my passions is interior design. I LOVE to decorate pretty much anything {LOL}! Since this is a Big Kid Room Party, I thought I would share some of the things that I did when I decorated Lucas' room.
The first thing is to look OUTSIDE of the typical kid's stuff and stores when looking for decor and accessories. Usually, not only will you save money, but it will also be nicer quality and just cuter in general! None of the items below are "children's products", but they look great in the room and add a lot of character. The antique car I purchase at TJ Maxx for under $10. I also purchased an antique motorcycle that is not pictured. The Country Road sign, tin barn stars and the rattan trunk {used as a toy box} were purchased at Old Time Pottery. I LOVE that store! Everything is super affordable and cute! The barn stars were only a few dollars a piece, the trunk and the sign were each $25. The chandelier was purchased at either Home Depot or Lowes {can't remember} and was about $50!

Garage sales, garage sales, garage sales! Seriously, they, along with thrift stores, your parents attic or basement {LOL}, and Craigslist are your best friends when decorating ANY room of the house. All of the items pictured below are either hand-me-downs or from a garage sale. The rocking horse and white picket shelf are from a garage sale--each cost $5! The tractor was Mike's when he was a child. The armoire and little bench were given to us by family members who didn't want/use them anymore. The armoire used to be all white {was my nieces nursery furniture} so I distressed it and antiqued it.

Artwork can be expensive so I like to use pages out of books, magazines, and even calendars as wall art. Just buy some inexpensive frames at Walmart or Target, cut out the pages, and insert in the frame. Voila! Affordable and cute artwork! That's what the car pictures are below. I purchased 15 vintage magazine ads on Ebay for UNDER $5 TOTAL!! I have a ton that aren't even being used {LOL}. The small chalkboard picture was actually a painting that I hated so I painted over it with chalkboard paint. Much easier than making a chalkboard from scratch and cheaper--if you don't have a picture to paint over then look at garage sales and thrift stores--I have purchased pictures for less than a dollar!

Ok.. first of all it has taken me about 10 minutes to make this comment because Graham wants to keep scrolling up and looking at the "tractor and trailer mommy".
Secondly, we also found a ton of stuff for Graham's room at TJ Maxx and Marshalls. We got two pieces of artwork for $15!! I also used little animal picture holder from Pier 1 that were on clearance.
Thank you for this post because I needed to be inspired again for what to do about Graham's big boy room. We have a lot less money this time to decorate with!!!
It looks beautiful Piera!

What great ideas! I especially like the chalkboard paint over an ugly framed picture - I'm DEFINITELY using that idea!

Piera... I love the room!!
I have used old calendars as artwork before. You can even use it in a more formal setting if you want by getting a fancier frame and using a matte.
I love the idea of the chalkboard paint on an old ugly painting, I'll have to tell my daughter-in-law so she can use it in my grandson's room.
Thanks for all the fabulous tips!!
