Back to School Wardrobe on a Budget: Dress Your Student for $50 or Less at Walmart!

Sunday, August 30, 2009 Posted by Jolly Mom

When I was pregnant with Lucas, I learned a little secret that many people do not know--Walmart has really cute children's clothing {nursery & bedroom decor too!} for a very small price tag. Honestly, I cannot bring myself to spend a small fortune on designer children's clothing when kids go through clothes super quick. Not only do kids have constantly revolving tastes and sizes, but they are also rough on their clothes. That's why a large part of Lucas' clothes {especially the basics!} come from Walmart--affordable, comfy, and cute! Now that most parents are in back-to-school mode and seeing that parents spend an average of $234 on their child's back-to-school wardrobe; I thought it was the perfect time to show you guys how to dress your kids for less at Walmart--$50 or less for an entire week's worth of clothing. Yep. $50 for the entire week. Walmart made it very easy for me--they provided me with a $50 gift card to shop for clothing {thank you Walmart}.

My favorite area to shop for Lucas is this center rack of basics by Garanimals. You can get t-shirts {both long and short-sleeved}, turtlenecks, sweat pants, sweatshirts, and more for $3.50 a piece! You can find deals like this for both boys and girls in all age groups and these are not SALE prices--they are everyday low prices.

Check out the racks and racks of unbelievable prices for boys:

and girls too:

I scored big time for Lucas! I found short-sleeved t-shirts on sale for $2 so I bought a bunch of those and a couple long-sleeved shirts. I can dress Lucas in either the short-sleeved or long-sleeved shirts on their own for one look or pair them together for a layered look as it gets colder! I also bought him a couple of adorable cargo-styled sweat pants {$4.50 a piece!} and a pair of khakis and jeans.

Items Purchased:
7 T-shirts {long and short-sleeved}
2 button down long-sleeved dress shirts
1 hoodie
4 pants

Total Spent: $53.53 I went a little over, but I could have easily left a t-shirt and still made out like a bandit!

And...look how cute {and stylish} Lucas looks in a few of his new outfits {everything pictured besides the shoes is from the $50 Walmart shopping trip}!

At the VERY LEAST, I can dress Lucas for an entire week, but I can make so many different combinations--dressy or casual with the clothes that I got for him. With families everywhere {including mine} struggling financially, back to school shopping at Walmart just makes sense, but honestly even in a good economy--saving money by shopping at Walmart makes sense! Here's the cool part--one of you will get to take the $50 challenge too!

This contest is closed. Congratulations to the winner, Allison! Winner has been emailed and has 48 hours to contact me.

We do alot of shopping at Walmart since we are a family of eight on a budget. I have five in school this year so it gets a little spendy. I try to shop sales and clearance throughout the year. I don't even want to guess how much I will have to spend on school clothes. With socks, shoes, underwear, shirts, pants, hoodies and coats...hundreds I imagine.

I'm not sure how much I spend. It's usually $10 here and $20 there. If I were smarter, I'd be keeping track of that because I think I'd be disappointed in how much it is. I wouldn't mind if Walmart helped!

We don't have children, but I do know that when we need to get a few of those basics to re-jumpstart our wardrobes it adds up so fast! I never really looked at WM for clothes before, but recently I have puchased two t-shirts there, one for $5 and one for $7. Both have quickly become favorites! They are cute, comfortable, stylish, and I didn't drop a fortune for them! I love that!

We don't have to do a lot of BTS shopping yet- my son is only 2. However, I do pay attention to what's on sale each week via email and circulars. We have also avoided buying a lot of clothes by "inheriting" outgrown ones from a friend's son and then passing them along once he's too big. I'm hoping that will continue.

My son is only in preschool, but the way he grows we usually spend several hundred dollars throughout the year. To save money, we hit the outlets a few times a year. Just went last night and was able to pick up individual pieces from The Children's Place for $2.99 each.

I actually started shopping for things earlier this summer just picking up an item here and an item there. I went out right before school started and bought each of the boys school shoes on sale for a total of $100 for all!! We have 4 boys and with the way the economy is right now I haven't spent much at all. However, a shopping trip to Wal-Mart with $50 could really come in handy! :)
My tip is to always price compare and when shopping online go to a search engine and type in coupon or discount code before you place your order. I usually save on shipping or get a % off doing it this way.

We shopped the Clearance racks, garage sales, or Salvation Army type stores. I also did this over the total summer.........not all at once.
I now have grandkids and one great grand child soon to come.........so I still keep an eye out for the sales.

buy in bulk and and then divide up

We typically spend about $200 per child for back to school shopping, which really adds up. What we like to do, though, to make it easier is start buying during summer - little bits at a time, so it doesn't all hit at once. Of course, if I bought at Walmart, I could probably get both kids clothes for way under $200!

We spend about $300 for back to school shopping, I'd guess.

    Some money savings tips:
    1. Before you buy anything, see what you have. Take outgrown clothes in excellent condition to a re-sale shop, give them to friends or family, or donate them to charity.

    2. Assess what you need. How many shirts, sweaters, pants, etc are needed and in what color, etc.

    3. Put your child's name on the size tag on the inside of their coats, jackets, sweaters and hats. School lost and founds are filled with wonderful and expensive items that will probably be donated to charity because parents did n-o-t do this!

I have 3 teenagers to shop for. This year we tried to do it for 125.00 each. It's tough.
I try to shop off season, but with the boys that was tough this year cause they keep growing like weeds. With our daughter, we watch for sales on the things she really likes or needs (she is studying Fashion - so you can understand where I am going with this).
We used to spend about 250 each (we have 5 kids total two of them are over 21 now).... it's just tough to do anymore

We shop at Walmart for just about anything and everything in our house now, there we can stretch a dollar until it snaps!
I watch for sales, sales, sales, markdowns, some things I can get when on clearance for the next year - hoodies, sweatshirts, that kind of thing...
Shopping for teenagers is never easy, trying to do on a tight budget even harder, but Wal-mart makes it possible.

She is pretty good at getting what she needs and she is a bargain hunter like her mom. My son is 12 and I can do his shopping for under $50, he loves what I buy for him. Thanks for the entry.

This year, we have a back to school budget of $100.00 for clothes and school supplies. We really shop sales and there are alot of stores with season ending clearance right now. You can really get some good deals!

I don't generally go "back to school" shopping. I buy my kids new things as they need them throughout the year. I do, however, usually buy them new shoes for school which costs me about $100.

When my daughter was in High School about $150 to $200, I used to wait for the coupons to come in the mail from stores she liked

for two kids, about $200. We go to second hand clothes stores so they can look good and we can afford it.

I tend to buy throughout the year. So I don't really know how much I spend. Whenever there is a good bargain or clearance I stock up. I also swap with others and do yard sales both can save you a lot on money.

We typically spend almost $50 on back-to-school supplies. A good way to save money on them is to wait until school has been in session a week, then the stores really slash prices! Thank you for the contest!

We usually spend somewhere around $300.00. My best tip, is to look for sale items, and stock up on those. Usually stores around us will offer one or two items at a penney or dime to get you in the store. I'll buy a number of those items and go around to the different stores and buy their "get you into the store items." I'll do this each week for a few weeks and I usually do pretty well.
    Thanks so much.

We are at an in-between stage. My daughter started college, and since she lives at home and college students are truly casual in their dress, there was no 'back-to-school' shopping in the traditional sense. She picked up some notebooks and writing supplies, but the big item was her books and tuition, and they were taken care of by a grant. My grandson is just a baby, so it will be a little while before it starts for him!
As for savings tips, I always really stocked up on supplies during the pre-school sales. That way I kept a rolling stock of what was needed, and only had to fill in occasional required items that weren't on my 'keep it stocked' list.

My guess would be a couple hundred for all of us (family of 4). Tips: shop ahead of time. Like right now I'm buying shorts and short sleeve shirts for next year.

Boys get hard after they are into size small! Cute clothing just isn't out there as much. It's stripes and solids. My son is only 4, so I want him to still have cute clothing. These are some of the online store I shop at for my Mica who is 4:

Honestly, I couldn't tell you how much is actually spent on back-to-school shopping. I don't do it all in one clip - it's an outlet here, a sale there and the main goal is to get as much stuff crossed off of the list as possible. I might be horrified if I actually kept track of what is spent!

We typically don't spend a lot on back-to-school shopping since we homeschool our kids, so I'd guess around $50. I could get it all done with this gift card! My tip would be that your kids really don't need a new box of crayons or pencils every year, so just use what you have at home :)

I honestly don't know how much we spend on back-to-school. With 3 kids in a one-income family, I would probably have a heart attack if I actually sat down and calculated it all. LOL We do a lot of our shopping at Walmart, though, as they do have really good prices on everything. My best tip for back-to-school savings is to get supplies when they're on sale! All of the stores have sales before school starts and sometimes go through after school starts. Go to Walmart, Staples or wherever even if you're only picking up a few items...and then buy extras for later in the year or next year!

I really don't know how much I spend on back to school because I shop all year long. I do a lot of clearance shopping for the next year to save tons of money off the retail price. We live in TX so I don't need to spend too much on winter items. It does get cold, but freezing temps only last a few days. Thanks for the chance to win!

I try to spend as little as possible. This year I had some school supplies left over from last year so I didn't have to spend as much. I didn't do any clothes shopping so that helped. But if I had to I would buy on sale or shop at Goodwill. Or the best way to really save money is to win Gift Card's. lol. But even then I would still buy on sale.
