Oreck ProShield Plus Air Purifier {Review and Giveaway}

So many children in our country suffer from asthma and allergies. It affects adults too, but children especially are hit hard. Indoor pollutants can really irritate asthma and allergies even further. The Environmental Protection Agency says that people in the US spend an average of 90% of their time indoors so it is important to maintain healthy air quality! At the EPA's website, they list the following as potential household pollutants:
Oil, gas, kerosene, coal, wood, and tobacco products; building materials and furnishings as diverse as deteriorated, asbestos-containing insulation, wet or damp carpet, and cabinetry or furniture made of certain pressed wood products; products for household cleaning and maintenance, personal care, or hobbies; central heating and cooling systems and humidification devices; and outdoor sources such as radon, pesticides, and outdoor air pollution.Fortunately, Lucas, Mike, and I do not suffer from asthma or any serious allergies. However, Lucas sneezes a lot. As in 10-15 times per day. We think that it might be our dog, Aries. She sheds a lot and no matter how much we clean--the hair and dander still get into everything. Anyhow, when Oreck asked me to test out their brand new Advanced ProShield Air Purifier, I definitely said yes! If you've never heard of Oreck, they are one of the most respected and successful cleaning products companies in the world. Here's a little background on them.
About Oreck {from the website}:
David Oreck founded the Oreck Corporation in the United States in 1963. The company’s principal manufacturing facilities are in Cookeville, TN. Oreck Corporation began as a company manufacturing upright vacuum cleaners for the hotel industry in the U.S. The concept was to design a lightweight yet powerful and durable vacuum that hotel housekeepers would prefer to the very heavy models available to them. The idea proved so successful that now over 50,000 hotels throughout the world use Oreck vacuums. After a short time, hotel personnel asked to buy the machines for their own use, which gave the Oreck Corporation the idea to sell its unique products to the general public. Oreck now sells throughout North America and South America, as well as in Europe and Asia. It has the reputation of being the manufacturer of the very finest cleaning equipment available anywhere.
I'd say that Oreck knows what they are doing.
The Advanced Oreck ProShield Air Purifier removes and destroys 98% of airborne particulates, including viruses, dust, pollen, bacteria, mold spores, fungi, pet dander, cigarette smoke and odors in the home. It has some excellent features, such as:
- Cleans and recirculates the air in a 12' x 18' room twice every hour
- Truman Cell permanent filter never needs to be replaced for easy use, cost savings. Simply rinse clean, let dry, re-insert.
- Permanent Helios Shield uses ultraviolet light (UV-A) to eliminate odors and VOCs (volatile organic compounds)
- Six-stage purification system destroys particles as minute as 0.1 microns or one thousandth of a human hair.
- Remote control lets you regulate the unit from across the room.
- Now lays flat horizontally or on its side vertically; fits in tight spaces.
Word of warning though--our unit started "sparking". The manual says this is normal. When a large dust particle gets in-the unit sparks. Most of the time, this happens because the Truman Cell needs to be cleaned, but very rarely it can also mean that the unit is defective. Ours was sparking because it needed to be cleaned and now everything is fine. Just make sure that you clean it! By the way, cleaning the Truman Cell is very easy. Just clean with some soapy water and let air dry. You will need to clean it every 2-4 weeks.
I think the Purifier would also work great in a nursery. Newborn babies are super sensitive to dust mites, allergens, perfumes, etc and really need all the help they can get!
