Lifelong Learning Starts with Playtime. Borders Expands Their Toys & Games Section {Here Comes Santa Giveaway!}
I have always been an avid reader and used to spend quite a bit of my time at Borders. It is about five minutes from our house and it is just a great place to hang out--hot coffee, books, soft music, comfy chairs--can it get better than that? Honestly, now that Lucas is in the picture, I hadn't visited a Borders in quite a while. However, I recently found out that Borders has expanded its Toys and Games section in over 500 stores nationwide. I am so beyond excited about that--now Borders can be a place for us to go as a family and shop for Lucas too! Borders generously gave me a $100 gift card to shop in the newly expanded Toys and Games section and see what all they have to offer. I have to say that I never expected to be blown away, but I was and I am.

Over the weekend, Mike, Lucas and I headed over to our local Borders to shop. I was greeted by the manager who was very helpful and introduced me to the Children's Department Kid's Specialist--Julie. Everyone was so nice and helpful and not just because I was there as a blogger. I overheard Julie talking to parents and interacting with the kids in the Toys and Games section. I could tell that she loves her job and really enjoys working with kids. Here's the cool part--Borders is staffing all of their 500+ expanded stores with Kid's Specialists. They are there to answer questions and make toy, game and book recommendations, which is wonderful if you're shopping for a gift or just want some new ideas for your own child.

What really blew me away about the Toys and Games Section was how HUGE it is. I thought it would be a small area with a few toys--kind of with a boutique type feel. Not all. The Toys and Games Section in my Borders is huge and includes products from leading brands such as Melissa & Doug, Creativity for Kids, LEGO Systems, Inc, Playmobil, Scientific Explorer™, Chicco, Battat, Blue Orange Games, ALEX and many others. I can't tell you how much I loved seeing all of these awesome brands all together under one roof. It is amazing! All of the toys are handpicked for their educational benefits for ages 0 to 12 while still being FUN for babies and kids. LOVE that!
My biggest worry going into this was that the toys were probably really expensive--over priced compared to other stores. I was so happy to find out that this is most definitely not true. For example, the Melissa & Doug toys are on sale buy one get one 50% off and the prices are about the same as other toy stores without the sale. The Birthday Party Set for instance is priced at $19.99 at Borders and the same set is $20.99 at Toys R Us. So it is a bit cheaper at Borders at the regular price, but if you buy two at Borders, you will get one for 50% off--making them CHEAPER. They were even running many other promos--like a free toy when you spent over $25, Buy 2 Dr. Seuss books get the 3rd for free, and more. Also, if you become a Borders Rewards Member {which is FREE} you will get weekly coupons and promos in your email inbox! You can truly get some WONDERFUL DEALS at Borders if you shop sales, promos, and take advantage of the coupons they offer!

Oh and I don't want to forget--while you're there--check out the rack with all the small toys. These are so cute and perfect for stocking stuffers! There were harmonicas, recorders, kaleidoscopes, and so much more. Everything was just a few dollars too!

Finally, you have to check out the children's events in-store as well! I found out that Julie--the kid's specialist--has story time every Wednesday morning. Plus, there are year round and seasonal events as well. For instance, they just had a Fancy Nancy event and a Polar Express event is coming up. I can't wait to take Lucas to these!

Borders provided me with a $100 gift card to their store so that I could experience the Toys and Games Section. All opinions expressed in this review are my own and not influenced in any way by anyone. Please refer to this site's Terms of Use for more information.

WOW, I never knew Borders had so much!!! I usually am in a hurry, focused on finding one book!
I was looking for a smaller gift idea for a 4 year old. I found the Hello Kitty Big Roll Bingo. Alli LOVES Hello Kitty so I was drawn to that. BUT, also thought a lot about the simple games that are just classic and kids really learn AND have fun while playing. THis is one of them!!! I love bingo. we have another bingo at home and kids love to play (learning letters and especially numbers), but we make fun by giving small prizes out such as pencils, stickers, fruit snacks, etc.

A big bucket of Legos. We had then as kids and there was always hours and hours of play. It's a great toy for kids then and now because it helps kids develop their imagination.

I like the "what's gnu?" game for kids--not only does it have competitive appeal, but it also helps with reading skills and word recall!

I've spent hours at Borders over the past 3 weeks and I always end up in the board games section. It was my favorite past time as a child and now my own children love to play with my husband and I. Borders has become so good at offering the best board games today. My "go-to" game of my past is now the same today with my kids - "Yahtzee" and there is a new spin on it (as there always is) that has proven very fun called "Yahtzee Free for All," which is the best spin yet. I also loved playing Win, Lose or Draw and Pictionary. Today there is one called "Luck of the Draw" that has quickly made it to our family's favorite. There's been no funner version of a drawing game in my 44 years of living.
Our family really enjoys fast paced, creative thinking games like Taboo (my fav) and Scattegories as well as card games. So I would immediately add to our collection the following board games we have been wanting: Pictureka; Quiddler; Beat the Parents; Catch Phrase; Buzz Words; Blokus and Flinch. I would also purchase the Lego Avent Calendar.

I am a big lover of books and words and I think this gift card would help me share that love. Books, journals, note cards... all would be perfect. My son loves sports books so this would be great.

My siblings and I liked playing Hungry Hippo. I think it's good for kids to get away from their video games and cell phones and play a kid-powered game.
November 25, 2009 10:44 AM
Borders has a Dinosaur Matching Game. I remember playing card matching games as a child. This is a good game for kids today because it builds memory skills, develops problem solving strategies, and enforces social interaction. In addition, during play children learn the names of dinosaurs.
