Repurpose Household Jars, Containers, & Baby Food Jars: Make Your Own Spice Rack

Monday, January 04, 2010 Posted by Jolly Mom

At the start of every new year, I like to get rid of things around the house and get organized. I start in the kitchen. Specifically the pantry. I'm always amazed by how much expired food I find in there--especially spices! Last year, I came up with a really cool way to store my spices using baby food jars, a baby food carousel, and labels. I blogged about it then, but I thought it was time to bring it back for those of you looking for new and easy ways to get organized in the new year.

All you need are baby food jars that have been thoroughly cleaned and food labels removed. Once they are clean and ready to be filled, you will need to figure out a way to label the spices contained within each jar. I used spice labels from Mabels Labels, but you could even print your own using a simple word processing program.

If you have kids, you may already have a baby food carousel, like this one or any other you have or can find. They are very affordable {the one at Babies R Us is $7.99} and work perfectly for this project! Here is how mine turned out:

It totally organized my spice cabinet! Now, I can easily get to all of my spices and can actually see everything. Plus, it looks cute too!

We use Graham's old baby food jars for Matthews tool bench! He stores all his nuts, bolts, and small items on a shelf.

I also use them for my homemade sugar scrubs!

I love this idea. I want to make one too. Although...I would need more spices and herbs! I have a few basics...but nothing like what you have!

This is so perfect! You should link this to the Coupon Teacher's Thrifty Thursday blog carnival. I also remember reading on Twitter someone looking for a way to organize their spices. Check out #pantry. You are so creative. Thanks for sharing.

I HAVE to do this...everytime I open up my spice cupboard it all topples onto me. Even though we do recycle EVERYTHING I feel funny about throwing out all of those old containers. THIS looks great! Be cute to have kids trace and stick pretty contact paper on the tops of jars. A spinner too....Yay...I am loving this idea. Have to find someone with a tiny one to get jars. My kids are tweens, teens, and twenties!!

I have 32 spice various sizes and shapes of herb and spice bottles (I just went and counted them) taking up an entire bottom shelf of a large upper kitchen cabinet. This would be so much nicer and I could gain back some cabinet space in the process. Thanks I never knew about this carousel.

I should of kept my son's baby food jars for this. I'm an art teacher, so I kept them to hold paint.

They work GREAT for my Color and Design Theory class! I didn't have a lot of jars because I made a lot of my own baby food.

I really like Felicia's idea, too!
Too bad, I don't have anymore baby food jars... :-)
