Magnesium & Its Role In Good Health: Ancient Minerals {Review and Giveaway}

Thursday, April 29, 2010 Posted by Jolly Mom

I am a big believer in natural remedies and supplements. I, myself take homeopathic medicine on a daily basis and call upon them often when Mike, Lucas, or even my dog Aries get sick. While I do consider myself pretty well read when it comes to natural health, I had never really paid much attention to magnesium and its health benefits until a company called Magnetic Clay contacted me about their line of magnesium products called Ancient Minerals.

PhotobucketPhotobucketPhotobucket

Below is a little of what I learned from Ancient Minerals about magnesium and its role in the human body.

What is magnesium? It is a mineral widely acknowledged by the scientific and medical community as being essential for several hundred different functions in the body. Magnesium aids the body in making or utilizing protein and similarly, if you don’t have adequate amounts of magnesium, the vitamin C and E that you consume cannot be used.

The problem: Research shows that 68% of individuals in the United States do not consume the daily recommended amount of dietary magnesium, and 19% of Americans do not consume even half of the government’s recommended daily intake of magnesium. Even worse is that these statistics are based on an RDA that is--according to the Independent Vitamin Safety Review Panel--set too low.

Factors affecting our magnesium intake:
  • A more highly polluted and toxic environment means we need more magnesium. {According to Dr. Mark Sircus, the human body needs 1000 mg a day.}
  • Due to more processing, our food has much less nutritional value and doesn't provide magnesium like it used to.
  • We are consuming too much calcium.
Why is magnesium deficiency a problem? A lack of this critical nutrient is a major factor in many common health problems. Common conditions such as mitral valve prolapse, migraines, attention deficit disorder, autism, fibromyalgia, anxiety, asthma, and allergies have all been associated with a deficiency in magnesium.

What can you do about it? A lot of people will be tempted to want to supplement with oral magnesium tabs. However, this is not the way to go because only a minimal amount is absorbed when taken orally. What happens is that oral magnesium has a laxative effect on the body and most--if not all--is lost in the process.

The answer is to get your magnesium through the skin--or transdermally. This is where Ancient Minerals comes in.

Photobucket
Ancient Minerals is a line of three transdermal magnesium products--bath flakes, oil, and gel--that utilize an ultra-pure, highly concentrated form of naturally occurring magnesium chloride along with other trace minerals.

Ancient Minerals sent us all three products to try out and we've been using them for the last few weeks. While I can't say that I have more energy or anything like that yet, we have experienced some good results. From the gel clearing up a rash on my hand and soothing Lucas' eczema patches to the bath flakes providing a relaxing soak in the tub, I am happy with the products and most of all--I am happy knowing that we are getting more magnesium.

Here's a little bit about each of the three products:

ANCIENT MINERALS MAGNESIUM OIL: The original and still the most popular, Ancient Minerals Magnesium Oil, contains only raw, highly concentrated, ultra pure magnesium chloride and other trace minerals drawn from the Ancient Zechstein Seabed in Northern Europe.

  • #1 most recommended magnesium oil in the world
  • Rapidly absorbed into the skin
  • Easy application in a convenient spray
  • Most efficient method at restoring cellular magnesium levels
ANCIENT MINERALS MAGNESIUM GEL PLUS: Ancient Minerals Magnesium Gel Plus combines the healing power of magnesium chloride with biologically active, certified organic aloe vera extract (ACTIValoe®) in therapeutic amounts.
  • Significant for massage applications
  • Highly therapeutic for psoriasis, eczema, and other skin conditions
  • Extensive topical and cosmetic benefits
ANCIENT MINERALS MAGNESIUM BATH FLAKES: Ancient Minerals Magnesium Bath Flakes are the dry flakes of magnesium chloride and other naturally occurring trace minerals, in a convenient and economical form for utilization in baths and foot soaks.
  • Ideal for children and other sensitive individuals
  • Effective for stress relief and relaxation
  • Great for soaking achy muscles and joints
  • Highly therapeutic for psoriasis, eczema, and other skin conditions
Just a few of the positive results that have been reported from the utilization of transdermal magnesium chloride:

* Restores cellular magnesium levels
* Natural cellular protectant
* Facilitates safe and effective detoxification
* Relief of aches, pains, spasms
* Elevates mood and relieves stress
* Encourages healthy skin tissue
* Helps maintain proper muscle function
* Boosts energy levels
* Supports a healthy immune system
* Balances the hormonal system
* Calms overactive nerves
* Improves quality of sleep

    i learned that The efficiency of topical applications in regard to magnesium is justified by the skin's ability to absorb substances which are then carried by the circulatory system around the body. It is also harmless as the skin will not absorb more magnesium than the body needs. Topical application of magnesium chloride is also considerably superior to the commonly suggested oral magnesium supplements and in actuality is the most practical way magnesium can be re-established to proper levels

    Ancient Minerals magnesium products are highly therapeutic and healing to skin conditions such as psoriasis, eczema, acne, poison oak, etc. Topically applied magnesium chloride enhances skin barrier function, decreases inflammation, speeds wound healing, and augments skin cell hydration. However, if you have broken skin or have a good portion of your body is affected, it is advised to start with magnesium baths until the skin has had a chance to start healing and become less sensitive to the high concentration of magnesium salts in the magnesium gel and magnesium oil.
