Step Into Summer With Borders! {$100 Gift Cards--2 WINNERS}
When I was a young girl, I spent the Summers doing what all kids do--swimming, riding my bike, playing with friends, and...reading. I read a book a day pretty much. Do you guys remember the Choose Your Own Adventure books and the Sweet Valley High books? Those were the types of books that single-handedly sparked my love for reading. They were fun and interesting...maybe not educational per se, but they made me want to read. This Summer, I suggest you check out Borders and their Double Dog Dare Summer Reading Challenge, which rewards children for reading by giving them a FREE BOOK when they read any 10 books this Summer! If you haven't heard about it, make sure to read this post which explains in detail how the program works.
And, to get your home libraries stocked this Summer, Borders is also sponsoring a wonderful giveaway today for you guys!

Borders provided me with a gift card as a thank you for spreading the word about their Summer reading program. All opinions expressed in this review are my own and not influenced in any way by anyone. Please refer to this site's Terms of Use for more information.

I have a reward program for my daughter. For every book she finishes (it has to be approved by me) I give her a ticket (purchased these at a party store)
She can redeem her tickets for such items as a trip to dairy queen (3 tickets), a sleepover for her and her girlfriends (5 tickets), 5 dollars to spend in toy store (3 tickets ) ect.. This gets her soo motivated to read I have to giggle but it works great!

We read to our 2-year-old daughter every night as part of her bedtime routine. We let her pick which books she wants to read, and besides just reading the story we ask her lots of questions about what she sees in the pictures. She has fun pointing out all the objects she recognizes. :)

Honestly, my daughter (6) is a passionate reader, and I'm not sure what it is I did right, but am so happy about it. My best guess is surrounding her with books from the time she was a baby. On every level of the house we have shelves of books, and we read all the time.

We try to join the library summer reading programs. Plus I'm setting up this week a deal on earning point to use on the video games based on how many chapters they read, say 10 point per chapter. We have a point system for earning minutes on the Wii. Every point equals one minute. They also earn points for doing jobs around the house and keeping their rooms clean!

June 28, 2010 12:53 PM
I read to my daughter every day; she loves books. My tips for older kids would be: let them choose their own books; choose books about things they're interested in; let them read (appropriate) comic books; get them a library card; let them see you reading as much as possible and *enjoying* it; and make sure that reading time is always fun time, never a chore. Can you tell I was a teacher? :-)

Ok for starters I have to say I need to ask you to please remove my comment #95 as I got confused with another borders giveaway as I have entered a few others. I submitted a daily tweet and I have yet to make my first comment...lol
The bast advise ican give anyone with children is to read to them often. I was blessed with a mother that read to me every night before bed and motivated me to read by buying me books when i wanted them or magazines. Where she would say no to a toy of somesotr I was alloud to get a book if we could afford it. reading is searously one of the best gifts one can give there child. If they know how to read the possibilities are endless. I could go on about this forever. I will probly end up blogging about it because I am so passionate about it because it was through reading I got the skill of writeing and hidden in my poetry are the whispers of my soul.

Read to them every day when they're little...then let them read to you. Once they can read on their own, sit down and read your own book and encourage them to pick one up as well.

I think I'm pretty lucky. My son has found some series books that he loves to read. He really likes the Warrior series and the Seekers series. I take them away as punishment.

My daughters are older now, but when they were younger I always took them to the library and signed them up for the childrens' summer reading program. They loved to see how many books they could read in a summer, and we often made several trips a week to the library. Thanks!

Our kids like to read alot so trips to the library are a big treat and help with finding new stories to read about so they don't get bored.

My daughter can't read yet but she loves to be read to. she also loves to look at books and make up stories by looking at the pictures. My son has the option to read during his sister's naptime or nap himself. He usually reads during this time. He also likes to do word searches, so I let him do this sometimes as well. o me, as long as it is educational and quiet, it works. ;)

I try to make it fun and interesting by going to the library and letting the kids pick out books they think look interesting. It makes it fun and exciting!

The best way to get a child to read is do it right after breakfast before the other things they want to do outside get started. Start off with letting them read to you. Later as they are making it a daily habit they can read on their own but ask them to tell you about what they read. You stay involved. ybutler@oppcatv.com
