Scholastic Children’s Dictionary Back-To-School Blog Tour! {$100 Old Navy Gift Card Giveaway}
Today is the first day of the Scholastic Children's Dictionary Back-To-School Blog Tour and I am thrilled to be STOP #1! You know what that means? It's time to start talking back-to-school again and if your kids are anything like I was as child--they want the perfect "first day of school" outfit! I remember one year--I was around 11 or 12 years old and the New Kids on the Block were all the rage. Yes, I was a fan. A real fan. The type of fan that plastered their walls with tear out posters of Jordan Knight {my favorite}. I owned and wore all of their t-shirts. I even owned an NKOTB watch. Please don't judge me LOL. OK, so my mom and I headed to the mall to build my back-to-school school wardrobe. Of course, being a "tween"--I didn't particularly like walking around the mall with my mom. So, she decided to give me one of her credit cards so that I could pick out an outfit for the first day of school all on my own {don't judge my mom--this was "old school" parenting LOL}. I was stoked! With credit card in hand and mom no longer cramping my style, I walked around the mall in search of the perfect outfit for the first day of school. So, what did I get? A $100++ NKOTB pleather jacket...which my mom promptly made me return. Good thing too because as cool as it was--a pleather NKOTB jacket did not exactly make an "outfit".
1. Before you shop, inventory your child's closet and make note of what they need. Take any clothes that don't fit anymore to a consignment shop or donate to Goodwill.
2. Make a list of all the items your child will need in the upcoming year. Include clothes for gym classes and any other extracurricular activities they may be participating in (soccer, cheer leading, band, etc).
3. Make sure that you check to see if your child's school has a dress code before you shop!
4. Time to shop! Set a budget and inform your child of the budget so that you are both on the same page. This can even be a learning experience in money management skills!
5. Concentrate most of your efforts on buying only what your child needs. Stock up on basics like shoes, jeans, shirts, socks, and underwear. There's no need to buy an entire wardrobe now. Buy clothing throughout the year as you child needs them.
6. Since trends come and go in a flash, try to keep trendy clothing to a minimum. Buy only a few trendy pieces that your son or daughter "just has to have" and then wait until later to buy more.
7. The first day of school is very important to kids so let them feel confident and purchase one special outfit for that first impression. It's also a good idea to have the first day of school outfit planned out because it helps assuage children's anxiety and nerves about the big day.
8. Take advantage of the many back-to-school sales and don't forget about the end-of-summer clearance racks (it will still be hot in most parts of the country when school starts).
9. Shop stores like Old Navy, Target, and Walmart. They carry all the basics at unbeatable prices and they also do a great job of offering "trendier" clothes too.
10. Above all, have fun shopping with your kids!
You can also find many helpful back-to-school shopping checklists online like this one from Scholastic. Also, make sure to add Scholastic's new 2010 Edition Children's Dictionary to your back-to-school shopping lists. It is truly a must-have for any child starting school this Fall!

Me growing up!
The moral of the story is never, ever give a tween a credit card! Seriously though, it is very important to be prepared before shopping for a back-to-school wardrobe and as much as they don't want to admit it--kids need guidance when it comes to shopping and preparing for the first day of school. What to buy, how much to spend, where to shop, what will fit them, what will they wear? With a bit of pre-planning, you can make back-to-school shopping something you and the kids will actually look forward to. That's why Scholastic has partnered with 15 bloggers--including myself--to celebrate the launch of their must-have 2010 Edition Children's Dictionary with 15 days of back-to-school tips and awesome giveaways for their Scholastic Children's Dictionary Back-To-School Blog Tour! I am honored and excited to be STOP #1 in the blog tour, but be sure to scroll to the bottom of this post for a list of all the stops. I love your tip about having the "special outfit" for the first day of school. I remember how nervous I was every single year to go back to school!
My best back to school tip:
Take advantage of your state's sales tax-free shopping weekend.
Texas has its in mid August.

Joey was my favorite but Jordan was my back up. I loved it when he sang really high! My room was also plastered with pages of Bop and Big Bopper and I would have been soooo jealous of that jacket!
I don't have any back to school tips because my oldest is only 3 :)

I actually get a lot of my daughter's clothes on eBay! You can buy them in a "lot" of one size, and get a ton of great stuff for little money...even if you don't end up liking half the stuff in the lot, you still make out like a bandit! :)

Buy only a few trendy pieces that your son or daughter "just has to have" and then wait until later to buy more." Completely agree with that one, get the basics, jeans, tops, shoes, spent smaller amount on acessories and different tops, carawling(at)hotmail(dot)com

I'm a teacher by profession, and my tips would be that, for younger kids, parents should drop them off and then leave. Don't hang around making the separation harder. Also, make sure to do your school shopping well in advance of the first week of school. If you have questions about something on the list, ask. Don't just buy something similar, because there might be a specific reason for what's on the list. :-) Be positive and excited about school, and chances are your child will be, too.
July 23, 2010 2:12 PM
My tip would be to take the kids on a pre-visit to look at clothes. Then on the weekend of the sales tax free shopping, take them to get what they need. cathyb4@yahoo.com

My best tip is to do a clothing and backpack swap with friends and family! Many items are still very new and it like recycling so its good for the planet! Plus it teaches kids to not have to value "new" things, that things that have been loved not used before are just as special.

My tips would be to buy some basics in black... a black skirt, pants and white shirt, etc. Then pick a color or two to coordinate with. This will keep the wardrobe interchangeable.
Also wait to get the majority of clothes on the after "back to school" sales.

This is my first time sending my son off to school, so I'd say, ensure to get as much information as you can as soon as possible and begin before registration day.
Make a list for all the things you'll need to do to get your child settled in school.
Write down all the questions you need answered.
Talk to other mothers and get tips on what to do.
Teach your child the basics for starting school so they are right up there with other children and ready to learn.
If your child is going back to school, then keep them regular with reading and fun exercises so they don't lapse in learning.

As an extension of your sixth tip, I would suggest waiting to buy *any* trendy clothing until after school starts. Stick with basics/classics for the first few days, so your child can decide if those trendy clothes are really trendy at his/her particular school. Otherwise you could end up with a trendy outfit that never gets worn!
July 23, 2010 9:42 PM
My back to school tip is to pick up some extra school supplies when you are shopping for your own kids for under-privileged kiddos. Children who come from lower-income households often depend on donations to feel positive and excited about starting school -- it also makes them more inclined to try their best and be motivated to do well... which makes a teacher like me a happy camper!

Best back to school tips:
1. Watch the ads.
2. Buy a year before. When all the stuff goes on sale at the end of the season. I do this all the time. Especially since my kids are young, and don't pick out their clothing anyhow.
3. I like to buy pants that are fairly neutral, so they'll go with a lot of things. Oh and jeans too.
4. Buy adjustable waist for young kids! Oh my first born is skinny, and has a little butt. A belt makes it hard for them to go potty.
5. Let them pick out a new book or workbook they can keep at home.
6. Get a reusable lunch bag and sandwich bag. You may spend more money, but in the long run you'll save.
7. I try and teach my oldest a big thing before school start. Something that will make my life easier, and give him more independence. This year it was going number 2 without the potty seat, and wiping his own bottom. Next year I'm shooting for him learning to tie his shoes.
8. Organize your child's room. They feel better when they know where their stuff is.
9. Put a coat rack in their room. We just did this! I know it will make a HUGE difference in the winter time because now he can hang his own coat up. Before I had a pile of them on the chair in the living room. I'd have to hang them all up, and get the coat down for him in the morning.
10. Some insurances pay for a free eye exam. Doesn't hurt to ask.

Two weeks before going back to school, we start our school bedtimes and wake up times. It makes for an easier transition.

My best tip is: start BTS outfits early and get kids involved. Also make a list of what should be done so you won't be forgetting any.

One tip is, we start getting the kids to bed a little earlier each night and waking up a little earlier each day, to help them set their internal clocks. Also take your children to the school find their classroom, meet their teacher, and find their lockers, all those things ahead of time, so they're not so overwhelmed on the first day.

My best tips are to shop discount stores and sales for staples like jeans, t's, socks, etc. Then fill in with accessories to mix and match and dress things up. Encourage kids to plan ahead and save for particular trendy items they "must have" but don't necessarily need.
Thanks for the chance to win!

My eldest is starting kindergarten this year (I am home educating but he will also attend co-op classes) so I have been reading all three of my little ones books about school and explaining what will take place to eliminate the fear factor of the "unknown". This makes it exciting as we "count down" to school

When it comes to going back to school, one tip I have is to be positive-make it exciting for your children. Also, when shopping (and depending on where you live)I stick to the short sleeves and clothing for a New England summer/Fall. I save the long sleeves and warmer clothing for Christmas gifts!
