Whimsical, Educational Children's Books by Debbie Ladd {Giveaway}
I was recently introduced to Debbie Ladd, a children's book author that both Lucas and I have fallen in love with. Debbie's books beautifully combine whimsy, educational subject matter, and humor into books that are a true joy to read. We aren't the only ones that love them--Debbie's books have received recognition from Locks of Love, Parent and Child Magazines, and the Mid West Book Review!
The two books that we received to review are What If? and Don't Pick Your Nose.
What If?
For children ages 3-8.
28 pages - hard cover.
$12.95
What If? is a lovely book that both parents and kids will LOVE. The book asks kids questions like "What if snowflakes came down square?" and "What if kids could jump on clouds?" Whimsical questions that will engage kids and have them answering and laughing out loud. Really FUN and ENGAGING book!
Don’t Pick Your Nose
For children ages 3-8.
24 pages - hard cover.
Buy it for $12.95
I love Don't Pick Your Nose because it tackles a bad children's habit in a light-hearted and funny way while still making the point that KIDS SHOULDN'T PICK THEIR NOSE! I also love in the end, the little boy learns that "You can pick fruits and vegetables. You can pick a flower. You can pick a friend. You can pick up sticks. You can pick lots of things, but you should never pick your nose." Cute, educational book!
About the Author:
Debbie Ladd has worked in the field of education since 1975 and has been writing children’s stories for almost 20 years.
While she holds a Masters Degree in administration/supervision and is certified to teach grades 1-12, Debbie has focused her attention on high school English and journalism classes. Labeled a master teacher, she has earned national and local recognition for her work as an adviser in Florida and Oregon and has spoken at national conventions around the country. She has also critiqued periodicals for several organizations and was presented with the Gold Award by a national publishing company. Most recently, she was featured in 2006’s Who’s Who in America and 2006 and 2008’s editions of Who’s Who of American Women.

Arr, Me Matey! The Importance of Preschool Pretend Play
A chef. A pirate. A fireman. A policeman. A doctor. A garbage collector. A baseball player. A monster truck. A football player. These are just a few of the things that Lucas pretends to be on a daily...no...hourly basis. Kids are imaginative beings. This is how they learn. By pretending to do the things they can't yet do. As parents, it's important that we encourage our kids to use their vivid imaginations and sometimes that means putting the battery operated toys with all the bells and whistles away for a little while.
Lucas loves to "build" things so we make forts with sheets and pillows and blankets. Nothing fancy, but all of a sudden that "nothing" becomes a pirate ship sailing the seas in search of lost treasure. An old wooden box becomes the treasure chest and plastic trinkets...our treasure.
Pretend play is fun and a great way for parents and kids to spend time quality time together bonding. Plus, they are learning and developing important life skills such as:
Another way to encourage pretend play is by the parents getting involved as well. I find that Lucas' imagination gets even more fantastical when Mike or I play with him. We can ask him questions like "who is he? where is he going?" and get him really involved in the story.

* How to solve problems and compromise (e.g., "This time I'll be the lifeguard who rescues you and next time you can rescue me.")
* How to communicate through words and actions
* How to express emotions (e.g., fear in the face of a child pretending to be a scary animal; delight (or jealousy) when a new baby comes home from the hospital
* Creativity and imagination; pretend experiences get more complicated and fantastic as children get older (e.g., instead of simply being a fisherman, they become deep sea explorers, searching for lost treasures on a sunken ship)
* Memory skills, as favorite experiences are acted out over and over again (e.g., getting a new pet, eating at a restaurant, taking a trip to the zoo)

Gooseberry Patch Keepsake Cookbook Celebrates Classic Family Recipes {GIVEAWAY}
A few years ago my mom gave me one of her most beloved possessions, a cookbook that her mother handed down to her. The cookbook looks like it's been through the ringer. The page corners have been turned down, handwritten notes have been added to the margins, some of the pages stick together--from food splatters, I'm sure. The book represents two generations of cooking and now with me--a third. It is now one of my most beloved possessions and I will one day pass it down to one of my children. Recipes are special. They evoke memories of our childhood. Of the moments we love and treasure the most.
Some of us may not have a "special cookbook" in the family and that's ok because YOU can begin your own family traditions. That's why I love Gooseberry Patch's newest cookbook titled, "Keepsake Cookbook". This cookbook contains 200 time-tested, classic recipes handed down by Gooseberry Patch family and friends. What's truly special about "Keepsake Cookbook" is that it is bound as a 3-ring notebook and includes 50 blank pages for you to add your own personal recipes. That way you can create your own family heirloom! I was already a big Gooseberry Patch fan and this cookbook does not disappoint. The recipes themselves are easy to make and their country charm will surely make them instant family favorites.
Each recipe is introduced with a banner heading that calls out a suggested use: make-ahead, kid-friendly, quick and easy, and more. I also love that it's bound as a 3-ring notebook because it allows you to move the recipes around and the book lays flat, which is so convenient when you're in the kitchen cooking. The Keepsake Cookbook also contains helpful tips at the end of most of the recipes. These tips are priceless! They include things like warming your soup bowls before serving, setting the table, floral arrangement ideas, and much more. Love this!

Warm Up with a Bowl of Homemade Cream of Mushroom Soup {Recipe}
Now that the weather is cooling down, it's time to warm up with some hearty stews and soups. One of my favorite soups is this cream of mushroom soup. Not only is it very easy to make on a busy weeknight, but it is also a very elegant soup that is perfect for dinner parties. For special occasions or a dinner party, make the soup and then ladle it into individual sized oven proof bowls, top with a round of puff pastry dough, and bake until the pastry has puffed up and is golden brown {follow puff pastry baking directions}. Beautiful presentation and so delicious!
Ingredients
* 5 cups sliced mushrooms {I like to use a variety, but it's good with regular button mushrooms too}
* 1 1/2 cups chicken broth
* 1/2 cup chopped onion
* 1/4 teaspoon dried thyme
* 1 tablespoon olive oil
* 3 tablespoons butter
* 3 tablespoons all-purpose flour
* 1/4 teaspoon salt
* 1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper
* 1 cup half-and-half
* 2 tablespoons sherry
Directions
1. In a large heavy pot, saute the onion and mushrooms in the olive oil. Add the broth and thyme to the pot and let come to a boil. Reduce heat to low and simmer until mushrooms are tender {about 10 minutes}.
2. In a blender, puree half of the mixture. Set aside in a bowl with the rest of the mushroom mixture.
3. Using the same pot you used to cook the mushrooms, melt the butter, whisk in the flour until smooth. Add the salt, pepper, half and half and mushroom mixture. Stirring constantly, bring soup to a boil and cook until thickened. Adjust seasonings to taste, and add sherry. Be careful with adding too much salt as it can easily over power the subtle taste of the mushrooms. If soup gets too thick, just add a little extra broth.
Serve with a salad and a crusty loaf of French bread. Delicious!

NEW Olivia Toys from Spin Master!
If you read my weekly DVD roundup post, Weekend at the Movies with Jolly Mom, you probably know that Olivia is my favorite children's program. I love everything about the show. From Olivia's quirky personality, confidence and wit to the "parenting lessons" to the beautiful, vintage-like animations. I just love Olivia and so does Lucas. He literally belly laughs every time he watches the show LOL. Naturally, when Team Mom let me know that Spin Master was launching Olivia toys and offered me a chance to review them...well...I was thrilled to say the least! In fact, when the toys arrived--Mike said to me with a hint of laughter in his voice, "Honey, YOU want to play with these don't you?" Ummmm....YES I DO!
Olivia’s confidence and positive nature inspires kids everywhere to think boldly and follow their dreams and now with the new Spin Master Olivia toys kids can go on their own whimsical adventures with Olivia!
Olivia 2-In-1 Transforming Playset magically transforms from Olivia's house to her pirate ship!
Open the set and play with Olivia in her house - it's just like her real house on the show! 3 different play areas include her bedroom, kitchen and living room. When you're ready to go on a pirate adventure, simply close the set and by opening it from the opposite side, you can magically transform her house into her pirate ship! The playset includes an Olivia figure & more than 23 accessories and stickers!
This is an adorable playhouse that even has a carry handle making it perfect to take to grandmas or on vacation.

Pilates for Pregnancy: Pregalates! {Giveaway}
When I was pregnant with Lucas, I wanted to work out and stay healthy throughout the 9 months, but honestly...I wasn't sure what I could or couldn't do any more. That's why I love these new Pregalates DVDs by pilates expert, Tasha Lawton. Pregalates is essentially pilates for pregnant women. The Pregalates series focuses directly on the issues that moms-to-be and new moms deal with. You know the sore backs, weak pelvic floors, stress, and months of feeling weak and tired?!
Everyone knows that pilates is an excellent way for women to stay lean and strong. Now with the Pregalates series moms-to-be and new moms can stay fit, strong, and feeling good too! The Pregalates DVD set offers one DVD for each of the three trimesters of pregnancy and one designed to help moms get back into shape after baby is born.
Let's talk pelvic floor. It's a term that is talked about a lot these days. That's because having strong pelvic muscles really matters when it comes to women's health. A weakened pelvic floor is extremely common in pregnant women and mothers. Pilates or "pregalates" in this case is an excellent way to keep your pelvic muscles strong. Not only will this make for a better labor and delivery, but it also helps immensely with incontinence issues that many new moms struggle with. Plus, the classes work on the transverse abdominus which is one of the muscles you use to push a baby out. If this muscle is strong you are more likely to have a smoother labor and faster recovery post birth!
Pregalates is available from www.pregalates.com and cost $49.99 for the set or $14.99 individually.

The featured product{s} in this post were provided to me free of charge by the manufacturer or pr company representing the company. All opinions expressed in this review are my own and not influenced in any way by anyone. Please refer to this site's Terms of Use for more information.

In their quest to help Boots find his cuddly dinosaur, Dora and friends put baby animals to sleep by singing a Spanish lullaby, help Benny find all of his stuffed animals, soar through the air in a balloon, and make a wish on their friend Little Star. With lots of help, Boots finally finds his cuddly dinosaur at Play Park, just in time for bed.
