Meet Our Children’s Modern Day Dr. Seuss! Shankman & O’Neill Children’s Books Review {Giveaway}

We are avid readers at my house and we do everything that we can to instill that same love for books into Lucas as well. As a result, the kiddo loves books just as much as his mama and dada! Storytime is a favorite around my house! I’ll be honest though–I have a hard time finding children’s books that I really love. You know those books that you actually enjoy reading to your child? Like Dr. Seuss for example–he is one of my all time favorites, but it is almost impossible to find those types of books anymore. Until I discovered Shankman & O’Neill Children’s Books.

Ed Shankman and Dave O’Neill are the perfect duo when it comes to writing children’s books. Ed Shankman has been writing children’s books since he himself was a child. Dave O’Neill is an illustrator and graphic designer who also began drawing when he was a child. Together, they have written three children’s books–I Met a Moose In Maine One Day, The Boston Balloonies, and The Cods of Cape Cod Love Their Summer Vacation.

About the Books {from the website}:

I Met a Moose In Maine One Day

In this lovable creation, a moose walks right into a boy’s home and introduces himself. The child narrator tells us:

“I met a moose in Maine One Day.
Just how it happened, I can’t say.
I brushed my teeth, I combed my hair
And all at once, the moose was there!”

Together, boy and beast play hide-and-seek (not the best game for a moose), walk into town, dance the night away, and then take off on a fun-filled adventure that neither will ever forget. You won’t forget it either.

The Boston Balloonies
For children, is there anything more magical than a balloon? So what could be more fun than “Balloonies”? What exactly are Balloonies? Read and discover!
“The Boston Balloonies
Float all over town,
And they whirl and they twirl
And they bounce up and down.”

But that’s not all. According to Shankman, Balloonies are never too busy to put on a show:

“They play banjos and bongos and oboes and flutes, And the one who plays trumpet swells up when he toots. There’s a beautiful singer who hollers and hoots,
And some back-up balloonies with fabulous boots.”

And did we tell you about the Boston balloony ballet? “Most people say it was quite a display!”

The Cods of Cape Cod Love Their Summer Vacation
Kids love this charmer about a family of codfish and their friends — a bunch of fun-loving sea creatures.

“The Cods never know
Who they’ll see by the sea
‘Cause their friends come to visit
Whenver they’re free . . .”

“. . .They come to the Cods
‘Cause they want to have fun
And when fun’s what you want,
Cods are second to none.”

We know you’ll agree.

Shankman and O’Neill were nice enough to send Lucas all three of their books for me to review and I am totally in love with them! Truly, these are some of favorite books to read to Lucas and more importantly–Lucas loves them too! They are whimsical and fun and the words just roll off your tongue. The illustrations are so creative and cute and encourage children to use their own imaginations. Words aren’t enough to express how much I love Shankman & O’Neill books. They truly belong in every child’s bookshelf. Shankman and O’Neill are like the modern day Dr. Seuss for our children’s generation. Just watch the three book videos above and you will see exactly what I mean. Trust me. You will love them! Now that the holidays are right around the corner, I highly recommend any one {or all} of these books as gifts! Your kids will love to receive them and you will love to give them!

Want It: The books can be purchased at various retailers and online. They retail between $10 and $12. To purchase, please visit ShankmanOneill.com for more information. Make sure you check out Dave O’Neill’s blog for the latest book art!

  212. These books look great, and I know that my two granddaughters would really enjoy them! I found out that both the author and illustrator are based our of New Jersey. Dave O'Neil moonlights as a comedian with “Out of Order” a N.J. based improv comedy troupe.
I also learned that Ed Shankman once played lead guitar, he paints and was a welder for 7 years while living on a kibbutz in Israel.

  215. Ed spent 7 years as a welder, having mastered the trade while living on an Israeli kibbutz in the late 1970s. The books look really fun!

  216. Both of the authors are happily married, which is nice to hear :) One is married to the love of his life, the other to the coolest girl in the world… I love it!! And the stuff they have come up with looks just fantastic!!
